LED Lighting: Why Every Geelong Home Should Make the Switch

LED Lighting: Why Every Geelong Home Should Make the Switch

Still running halogen downlights or old incandescent globes? You’re burning through electricity and replacing bulbs far more often than you need to. LED lighting has come a long way in the last few years, and for Geelong homeowners, the upgrade is one of the smartest moves you can make for your power bill and the comfort of your home.

Here’s what you actually need to know before making the switch.

The Energy Savings Are Genuine

A standard 50-watt halogen downlight can be replaced with an LED that uses just 7 to 10 watts and puts out the same amount of light. That’s roughly an 80% reduction in energy use per fitting.

Now multiply that across a typical home. If you’ve got 20 halogen downlights running for 5 hours a day, you’re looking at around 1,825 kWh per year just on those lights. Swap them to LEDs and that drops to about 365 kWh. At current Victorian electricity rates (around 30c/kWh), that’s a saving of roughly $440 a year from downlights alone.

Most homeowners recoup the cost of a full LED upgrade within 12 to 18 months. After that, it’s pure savings.

They Last Dramatically Longer

A halogen globe lasts around 2,000 hours. A decent LED fitting is rated for 25,000 to 50,000 hours. That’s over 10 years of use at 5 hours a day before you’d even think about a replacement.

For Geelong households, that means fewer trips to Bunnings, fewer burnt-out globes in hard-to-reach spots, and no more keeping a stash of spares in the laundry cupboard. If you’ve got high ceilings or lights above staircases, the reduced maintenance alone is worth the switch.

Light Quality Has Caught Up

Early LEDs copped a bad rap for producing harsh, cold light that made everything look like a hospital ward. That’s ancient history now.

Colour Temperature

LEDs come in a range of colour temperatures measured in Kelvin (K). Here’s how to pick the right tone for each room:

  • Warm white (2700K to 3000K) gives a cosy, relaxed feel. Great for living rooms, bedrooms, and anywhere you want to unwind.
  • Neutral white (4000K) is clean and bright without being harsh. Works well in kitchens, bathrooms, and laundries.
  • Cool white (5000K to 6500K) is ideal for garages, workshops, and task areas where you need sharp visibility.

Colour Rendering (CRI)

CRI measures how accurately a light source shows colours compared to natural sunlight. A CRI of 80 or above is fine for most rooms. For kitchens and bathrooms, look for 90+ CRI so skin tones and food look natural rather than washed out. Quality LED fittings hit these numbers easily.

Less Heat, More Safety

Halogen downlights run hot. Seriously hot. A halogen globe can reach surface temperatures above 200°C, which is a genuine fire risk when insulation, dust, or nearby materials get too close. In older Geelong homes with ceiling insulation packed tight against downlight fittings, this is a real concern.

LEDs run cool by comparison, typically sitting below 50°C during normal operation. That means you can safely have insulation in direct contact with IC-rated LED fittings, improving your home’s thermal performance and reducing your heating and cooling costs at the same time.

Victorian building regulations have tightened around downlight fire safety over the years, and upgrading to LEDs is the simplest way to bring an older home into line. Make sure your smoke alarms are up to date while you’re at it — halogen heat near old alarms is a common issue we find during inspections.

Your Options Go Well Beyond Downlights

LED technology opens up lighting design options that weren’t practical or affordable with older globe types.

Recessed Downlights

The bread and butter of most home lighting. Modern LED downlights are slimmer than their halogen predecessors, making them easier to install in tight ceiling spaces. You can choose fixed or gimbal (adjustable) styles depending on whether you need directed or general light.

Pendant Lights

LED-compatible pendants over kitchen islands and dining tables give you a feature piece without the energy penalty. Because LEDs don’t throw off heat the way old globes do, you can use larger, enclosed shade designs without worrying about overheating.

Strip Lighting

LED strip lights are brilliant for under-cabinet kitchen lighting, toe kicks, shelving, and outdoor entertaining areas. They’re low-profile, flexible, and draw next to nothing in power. A well-placed strip light can completely change the feel of a room.

Dimming

Most quality LED fittings are dimmable, but there’s a catch: you need a dimmer switch that’s compatible with LED loads. Old leading-edge dimmers designed for halogen globes will often cause LEDs to flicker, buzz, or not dim smoothly. A licensed electrician can match the right dimmer to your fittings so everything works as it should.

What Happens During a Professional Install

If you’re replacing halogen downlights with LEDs, the job usually involves more than just swapping globes. Here’s what a typical upgrade looks like:

  • Assessment: A sparky checks your existing wiring, transformer types, and ceiling space. Halogen setups often use 12-volt transformers that aren’t compatible with LEDs and need to be bypassed or replaced.
  • Fitting selection: You choose the style, colour temperature, and beam angle for each room. A good electrician will guide you on what works where.
  • Installation: Old fittings come out, new LED modules go in. If transformers need removing, the wiring gets reconfigured to run directly on 240V mains. Any dimmer switches get upgraded at the same time.
  • Testing: Every fitting gets tested, dimming checked, and the circuits verified to make sure everything is safe and compliant.

For a standard three-bedroom home, the whole job usually takes half a day. Larger homes or more complex setups with strip lighting, outdoor circuits, or smart controls might take a full day.

If your switchboard is outdated, it’s worth getting that assessed at the same time — older boards sometimes can’t handle the rewiring needed for a full LED conversion.

A Few Things Worth Knowing

Not all LEDs are created equal. Cheap no-name fittings from online marketplaces often have poor colour consistency, shorter lifespans, and dodgy drivers that fail early. Stick with reputable brands like Philips, Atom, or SAL. Your electrician will have preferred suppliers they trust.

Also, in Victoria, all electrical work including replacing light fittings must be carried out by a licensed electrician. Changing a globe is fine to do yourself, but swapping out the entire fitting or modifying wiring is not a DIY job.
